The challenges I have faced as a student in South Africa

By Alfredo Gomes, 26, Johannesburg

I am an international student and I have been residing in South Africa for the past 5 years with the hope of getting a quality education. Over the past 3 years, I have experienced major financial setbacks as a result of the economic/political crisis in my home country (Angola) which led me to drop out of university. It was a hard decision but everyday things were just getting worse, my family couldn’t afford to support me anymore, and was not eligible for financial support in South Africa – something I entirely understand as many young South Africans face the same challenges.

During the same period, my father fell quite sick and it got to a point where my family were struggling to send me money for essential things such as food. My family’s limited resources were not the only problem; the poor condition of our financial sector led to excessive restrictions to move funds outside.

My financial experience has taught me many valuable lessons as a young man. All I wanted was a chance to get the best education I could possibly have, and this pursuit has led me down life’s changing paths.

I became extremely active in volunteering work and had the privilege to hear many inspiring stories, and witness how many have overcome their challenges in life. I sought for emotional support to help me deal with my situation and became an active church member and started helping kids in the neighbourhood with their homework and other related tasks. My financial challenge made me rethink my position in society – I am not just an international student but an integral community member.

Through this whole process I also had the privilege to learn a new set of skills and I’ve gained experience in various areas of professional settings. Having the right people with and around me has had an extremely positive impact. Going through this kind of situation tends to make people fall into depression and make bad decisions, but real friends will keep you going.

Always remember: faith, patience and perseverance have a magical effect!
