Taking care of your mental health

The past week was extremely exhausting. The events that emerged in KZN, Gauteng and other regions of South Africa were really playing on the minds of many South Africans. While we may not reiterate what happened, the Voices Unite team hopes you and your loved ones were safe during this turbulent period and are able to rise above what transpired.

We would like to share some self-care tips that could help you get out of the slump you may be in or relieve the anxiousness that you may be experiencing.

  1. Write down how you feel

The power of writing down how you feel and expressing everything that is going on in your mind can be a great way to let go of things that are troubling you. While venting on paper, write down a bunch of positive affirmations that you can use as simple reminders or coping strategies.

  1. Give yourself permission to have a mental break

If you’re finding it difficult to focus or concentrate on the simplest of tasks, we suggest you take some time out, free your mind and then return. You can only conquer something when your mind is clear and in the right space.

  1. Take some time to do something you love

By consuming too much of news at once, this can make you feel anxious and restless. Take a break away from social media and news channels and do something that you love. Even if it involves taking a nap. Get away from your screen and breathe.

  1. Meditate for 5 minutes

Speaking of breathing, try meditating for 5 minutes. We have published a post on meditation before, so scroll through our Youth Tips and try it out. It will be a great reset!

  1. Be in contact with friends and family

During times of distress, it’s best to be in contact with friends and family to let them know how you feel. You should never bottle your feelings. Always be vocal about how you’re feeling. Even if you may think you’re bothering someone, it’s best that you let someone know what’s running through your mind.

We hope these few tips will help you feel better.
