Snap out of writer's block!

You must be wondering why we’re talking about ‘writer’s block’ on our blog? Well, we’ve all been through it before. Writer’s block does not only apply to the authors, poets or bloggers (ahem!). Students, researchers, academic professionals and freelancers have also found themselves to get a bit stuck now and then (not necessarily on paper but with Microsoft Word!). The question of “where do I start?” or “how do I start?” has happened to us at least once – there’s no denying it! Think about the times you had to write a research paper or begin an assignment, or create your CV. Yup, told you, we’ve been there before!

We’ve compiled a list of ways for you to snap out of writer’s block and get started with your writing…

  1. Call a friend

Yup! Just like that game show, use a lifeline and call a friend. Talk to them about what you need to write about and you’ll find as the conversation grows, you’ll find an outline being created on what you need to write about. You can either take notes while talking to your friend or jot them down once you finish the conversation. Friends are amazing, I tell ya!

  1. Get inspired

Inspiration comes in all forms. You can either read old pieces you have written before, like an essay or an assignment and realise that you were able to do it before and nothing is stopping you from doing it again. You can even look to other similar pieces that have been written on a topic you need to write on but remember, plagiarism is an offence and you should only let it inspire you to make it your own or make it better!

  1. Listen to music

Music can help with drowning out distractions and help you get into the writing mood. Some say classical music is the best but personally, anything with a good beat can make you feel a whole lot better. So, try listening to some music and if you have a favourite genre that can help you focus – even better!

  1. Step away from the desk

You need a break now and then. Sometimes sitting at your desk with your head in your hands does not help productivity. Go outside for a breath of fresh air, read a book or cook something. A break away from your usual work environment can help stimulate your thoughts and ease your mind which could put you in a better mood to start writing.

  1. Write something else

If you’re unable to write on the topic at hand, write something else. A letter to your friend, a poem about… cheese? Anything, just write about anything and get the creative juices flowing! Furthermore, the simplest solution usually is the answer and that’s the case with writing. To snap out of writer’s block, you need to power through and get words onto the page.

All the best with your future writing and we hope these tips help!
