I forgot my own meeting!

By Ulutho Kobese, 23, Eastern Cape

So, this particular day isn’t celebrated by many because guess what? People forgot. Okay, bad joke.

You could say I am a forgetful person at times but it’s not deliberate. I believe that everyone does not forget on purpose. We get distracted.

In life, there are so many things that can distract us from our important tasks, meeting deadlines or even the simplest things as wishing someone a ‘happy birthday’. Trust me, I am no saint, I forget like a lot.

Let me share a story. It was my friend’s birthday, social media reminded me, then I told myself “don’t forget to wish her a happy birthday”. The day went by and it was the next day, only then did I remember that I was supposed to say happy birthday.

Oh, another one? I forgot I had a meeting that I organised and I didn’t fully prepare. What a mess that was. I had to “wing” a whole meeting, luckily it was based on topics that needed ideas and discussions so it was easier. You know what’s the funny part? I was late. Yes, LATE, but I am the one that said “Meeting at 3pm”. I remembered the meeting when I received a call saying “Good afternoon, I will be a little late for today’s meeting” and it took a while for me to realise that the meeting my colleague was talking about was mine. Nevertheless, I told them when the meeting was done. I did a mini shout out and we all laughed about it.

Before the pandemic, I was always a busy person, being a student, in organisations and holding events. So I had to be a list person, where I do my daily tasks, handle them at their earliest convenience and then go about the day. Now, during the pandemic, a lot of things changed. From my sleep schedule to how I study and plan around it for organisations, and a lot of Zoom meetings. My environment became more relaxed, and honestly, I became lazy for the first few weeks to settle with the reality of the “new normal”. Bear in mind, that there were scheduled meetings that I had completely forgotten, how did I find out? Through minutes being revised. A mess!!

Well, happy international I forgot day. And please don’t forget to take out the meat from the freezer that you were instructed to do by your mom. It will only end in tears if you don’t.

Happy International I Forgot Day!
