A powerhouse called South Africa

By Gig Mensah, 22, Johannesburg

The variance and potency of cultures in our beautiful land brings a sense of pride in what may be esteemed as an extraordinary demonstration of humanity. It’s especially on days like Heritage Day where we get to be reminded that as a whole, we are greater than the sum of our parts. This Heritage Day, I point out our uniqueness as a nation, artistically woven from diverse cultures, as a reminder of a power that makes South Africa great.

Never have I seen a land so diverse in the array of people to which the soil may be called home. A disposition that natures both indigenous people and descendants from near and far. A land filled with living reminders of the seven seas – a blueprint of mother earth and its varied offerings of people.

Never have I tasted a land so cosmopolitan in its delicacy. Where food experiences differ in all the distinctive nine provinces of our land. Where taste buds obtain continued chances to adventure in assorted cuisines, each forming an explosion of flavours, in every corner – in every home.

Never have I engaged in the feeling of what seems to be traveling the world within the borders of a state. Where schools, streets, and all types of places of gathering embody an eclectic variation in skin colour, religious beliefs, traditions, and cultures. Where much is to be learned and gained through every interaction.

Never have I heard a unique linguistic rhythm in a group of people. Despite the land indulging in 11 different languages, similarities flow in the jovial expressions of one’s own language. Our people express enthusiasm to explore languages outside the terrain of their own mother tongue. And through joined derivatives of every language, a depiction of togetherness in the formulation of street lingo.

In the uniqueness of occurrences in our land, and how distinguished our people are, there lies multitudes of powers;

Power of extensive knowledge from different literature and narratives which capitalises on the lessons of different people, that enables us to tackle inequality and practice stewardship.

Power of creativity from having to engage with different ideologies yet finding a common ground to embrace all experiences.

Power of understanding, knowing that with differences lies the opportunity to practice openness and active listening to promote harmony and prosperity.

Power of competitive advantage by tapping into the richness and expertise each varying group of people is able to contribute to the nation.

I thrive in embracing a superpower known to all as South Africa, a diverse nation that embodies the notion that through differences, lies strengths.
