7 ways to practice self-care

We know, working a 9-5 (or studying) can be incredibly challenging, especially when you’re attempting to achieve a work-life balance but self-care is more than just juggling between time and responsibilities. Self-care is more about being nicer, kinder and more gentle to yourself. Living a life that is overscheduled and overtired probably means you are not prioritising yourself – your mind, body or health.

Furthermore, feeling drained at the end of the day will further reduce your productivity and efficiency. We have put together a list of ways in which you can practice self-care on an absolute budget – actually, free!

  1. Language and tone

Crazy isn’t it? Language and tone can have an intense effect on your mood or perspective. When you look in the mirror and negatively talk to yourself, it can have a drastic effect on your mental health. Even when you’re having a conversation with friends, most of the words you choose tend to describe how and what you feel. Resist the urge to negatively label yourself, instead encourage yourself on a daily basis and watch the magic!

  1. Slow and steady

There are only 24 hours in a day, whether you rush or not, there’s still 24 hours in a day. By slowing down, you will begin to appreciate things around you. Additionally, slowing down has some healthy benefits as well – maintaining a lower blood pressure and experiencing less stress and anxiety.

  1. Log off!

Isn’t it crazy how social media has become a part of our daily routine? Sure, it’s great to keep in contact with friends and family but most social media platforms can really destroy your happiness and self-esteem. Make sure you spend some time away from your devices every day to reduce unnecessary stress and anxiety.

  1. YOU are a priority

Too often we prefer to attend to the needs of others instead of attending to our own needs. Instead of squeezing time in your schedule for yourself, start blocking your calendar for your personal wellbeing. People-pleasing is difficult to break, especially when you have done it one too many times but start putting yourself first. Instead of showing up for others, start showing up for yourself!

  1. Sleep is never for the weak

Stop skimping on your sleep. A good night’s rest is absolutely necessary to recharge for the next day. According to neuroscientist, Dr Mitler, sleep provides your body a valuable service ranging from energy balance, intellectual function and alertness.

  1. Treat yo’self!

Those treats you gift others, try giving them to yourself. We are not saying break the bank and over splurge but something such as fresh flowers can absolutely lift your mood.

  1. Authenticity is key

It’s very easy to be consumed by what you see on social media. Creating several different identities to please others is just… not it. If you start stripping who you are as an individual, what do you end up with? It’s important to explore your identity and values but it’s never good to do it for the approval from others. Own who you are and be proud of who you are!

Use this list to start practicing self-care on a daily basis and watch how you will flourish!

I’m here for number 6. I think I’ve mastered the popcorn every Friday thing just to celebrate getting through the week.
