How to prepare for your online interview

Ever since COVID-19, we have been faced with the task of changing our daily routines to fit the ‘new normal’ and one of those things include online interviews. Job interviews in general can be daunting especially if it’s your first one and online interviews are popular in a number of companies in South Africa, so it’s about time you get used to it.

It’s time to prepare for the future, so here are a few ways in which you can prepare for your upcoming online interview with your potential employer.

  1. Test-runs are important

Technology can either be helpful, overwhelming or not on your side. You need to feel comfortable with whichever platform your interviewer prefers (Skype, FaceTime, Zoom etc.). Once you have an idea of the platform, test your internet connection as well as your computer/phone’s audio and make sure everything works smoothly. Ask a friend or family member to help you out by connecting on the other side.

  1. Pick an aesthetically pleasing spot

Make sure the spot you choose to do your interview is well lit and not dark. If possible, try to set up near a window as natural light is best whereas bad lighting is extremely distracting. If there’s too much light, the interviewer may have a difficult time seeing you and you should always put your best foot, I mean, face forward. A pro tip would be to do a trial run a day before to identify the best spot to have your interview. A neutral toned background would also be ideal to prevent further distraction. If you don’t have a neutral background, hang a solid colour bed sheet and you’re good to go.

  1. Eliminate distractions

Sound interference during an interview can either be embarrassing, unprofessional or annoying. Make sure your family or friends remain quiet during the scheduled interview and silence any technological device that could interrupt you from remaining calm and focussed.

  1. Sit up and dress professionally

Even though you’re meeting your interviewer through a screen, you still want to dress for success. Make sure you dress well and sit up straight. First impressions are lasting impressions!

  1. Maintain eye contact

As weird as this may be, even in the online environment, eye contact is crucial. Instead of looking at the person on the screen, look directly into the webcam to remain engaged in the conversation.

We hope these tips help you with your upcoming online interviews and all the best!
