Helping the world learn to live together
By AFS South Africa
AFS Interculture South Africa is a non-profit, voluntary, international exchange programme that promotes peace through intercultural learning. Through linking its learning to live together philosophy to defining global issues facing humanity, AFS is able to foster an intercultural understanding as a powerful tool for building an equitable world.
At AFS, volunteers develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world. The programme seeks to enable people to act as responsible global citizens working for understanding and peace in a diverse world, acknowledging that peace is a dynamic concept threatened by intolerance, inequity and injustice. AFS’ global community is:
- Transformative: living, volunteering, working and collaborating with people around the world;
- Multigenerational: a global community of young adults, students, families, volunteers, students, alumni, educators and staff working together;
- Inclusive: a network of supportive and welcoming open-minded, confident AFSers building bridges across cultures;
- Everywhere: making a difference in communities, across industries and at the fore of important international issues and social causes.
AFS aims to affirm faith in the dignity and worth of every human being and of all nations and cultures. The programme encourages respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms without distinction according to race, sex, religion, social status and language. More than 1 million volunteers, participants, staff and host families across the world have been part of the AFS network, demonstrating the power of the #AFSeffect.
