Failed Matric? Don’t stress!
Before you continue reading, we would like to tell you that you are more than your matric results. You are enough! We understand that you may feel like it’s the end of the world but this is just temporary. You may feel incompetent and wonder if this is the end of the road for you but remember, 2020 was not the easiest year we have experienced.
It has been reported that the pass rate decreased by 5.1% from 81.3% in 2019 to 76.2% in 2020. Considering the adjustments students had to go through regarding remote learning was not something we expected – ever! Luckily, matric results do not completely dictate your life and there are ways to recover from this minute failure.
- Be honest and introspect
The first thing you need to do is acknowledge that you have failed and you should not deny or ignore your feelings or pretend that you do not care. You need to examine the reasons as to why you failed and how you can change this failure to a win. There are many reasons ranging from personal problems, the Covid-19 pandemic or lack of resources that resulted in this outcome.
- Find a support system
Reach out to friends or family for support during this period. There’s no need to take this on on your own. Find support groups who have went through this and find out how they overcame this bump in the road.
- Change the situation!
There’s always a way to change your results and here’s how:
a) June Supplementary Exams 2021
The Department of Education allows students the opportunity to rewrite their matric exams in June.
b) Do it again
Redoing matric means a better opportunity at starting over and optimising your chances of bettering your results.
c) Technical Vocation Education and Training
Students who did not pass matric can also receive education and training towards specific education opportunities via TVETs.
d) School is not for everyone
Sometimes you may have a talent or strength in something else and you need to accept that school is not for you. The idea that success can only be obtained through education is very old-school. Consider prioritising your passions and making a profit from them.
Remember, failing your matric exams is not the end of the world and it’s never too late to start again!
