Educating and developing the youth
By Allan Gray Orbis Foundation
The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation (AGOF) invests in the education and development of young individuals who demonstrate the potential to become responsible high impact entrepreneurs. We do so because we believe that these curious, driven and responsibly minded young people are capable of significantly, positively and permanently impacting the economic lives of the communities, cities and possibly even the country they operate in. At the Foundation, we believe that the world needs entrepreneurs, as they are the primary catalyst of job creation. Our vision is to create an entrepreneurial, equitable South Africa flourishing with meaningful employment. To achieve our vision, we take a long-term entrepreneurial approach by offering the following programmes:
The Scholarship programme is a high school scholarship aimed at learners who have a curious, entrepreneurial mindset; have the potential to excel academically and are financially deserving. Scholarship recipients receive funding to enrol at leading high schools across the country in addition to support and interventions that develop their entrepreneurial talents and personal mastery.
The Fellowship programme looks for young achievers transitioning into university – people who want to make a big impact – not just in their lives, but also in their community, city and country. The Fellowship recipients receive funding for university and access to support and development aimed at cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset and personal mastery.
The Association is made up of those who have completed the Fellowship programme and have either entered the world of work or chosen to start a business. The purpose of the Association is to provide support for each Fellow’s lifelong entrepreneurial journey. It does this by developing a community of supportive peers, creating opportunities for development and equipping Fellows to start, build and succeed in their entrepreneurial ventures through incubator programmes, access to funding and the greater entrepreneurial ecosystem.
As part of creating a broader pipeline of responsible entrepreneurs from a young age, the Foundation introduced the Allan Gray Entrepreneurship Challenge which is aimed at cultivating a culture of entrepreneurship among high school learners, using gamification. The game exposes youth to entrepreneurial skills and mindset, through a series of micro-challenges, which allow learners to explore opportunities, and apply new knowledge or concepts to real-world situations.
