Did you choose the wrong degree? Here are the signs…
Before you officially enter the world of adulthood, choosing a degree (for those pursuing a post-school qualification) is the biggest decision you could possibly make. In that single moment, you would have decided what you would be doing for the rest of your life – yikes! However, some of us are still unsure or unhappy about the degree we have chosen.
Not sure if you’ve chosen the right degree? Keep on reading and identify the signs that apply to you…
- Help! I’m trapped!
There is nothing worse than waking up every day and attempting to work towards a ‘goal’ that you have absolutely no interest in. Being dissatisfied and uneasy with everything related to your degree is an instant warning sign that you should not ignore.
- Attendance
You may be attending lectures physically, but mentally you’re somewhere else. Lectures care be a bore (I know!) but if you barely pay attention, often find your mind wandering off as soon as the lecturer speaks, and if this is your everyday experience, you’re not in the right place.
- No passion
I came across a quote that said “Passion is the fuel that inspires and drives people toward specific goals.” which is 100% true. If you don’t find a spark that ignites some sort of excitement towards your course work, you’re going to have a terrible time.
- Assignments give you anxiety
Everyone struggles with assignments and deadlines. If completing course assignments and submitting them on time feels like an impossible task whilst your anxiety begins to flare up, you’re studying the wrong course. Students have gloomy days but if you’re absolutely clueless about what you should do and you have to perpetually force yourself to get it done, it’s best that you consider a change of degree.
- Bad grades
Tertiary education is not easy – ask anyone! However, this does not mean receiving bad grades should become the norm. Poor performances for tests and assignments could be due to a number of reasons but if you’re barely studying and don’t have any interest in what you’re studying, a change of degree should happen as soon as possible.
- You chose a degree that would ‘bring in the moola’
Certain jobs require certain qualifications but the degree you have chosen does not mean it will guarantee you a job. The thought of a fruitful income is all well and good but if you do not enjoy what you’re studying you need to realise that this could be your life for the next 40 years. Think about your choices carefully before it’s too late.
- Forced into your degree
“You should be a doctor!” “You should be a lawyer!” “You should be an engineer!” Uh oh! Parents always know what’s best for their children but at the end of the day, you’re the one that will have to spend three years of your life towards a degree you have no interest in. No one knows you better than yourself and advice from family is always welcome, but if you want to make the right decision, understand what it is that you like and what you will excel in.
If you’re convinced that you’re in the wrong degree, you need to take action NOW. There is no harm in speaking to student counselors or career advisors on your campus as they have probably dealt with hundreds of students in your position, and they may be able to guide you in the right direction or suggest the next steps you should take. Additionally, many of us have been in the position of changing our degree to something that we actually prefer, as well as enjoy.
Remember, you’re not letting anyone down – it’s your life and your future.
