Celebrating multicultural diversity
By University of Johannesburg (UJ)
In 2005, Vista University, Rand Afrikaans University and Technikon Witwatersrand merge to form the University of Johannesburg (UJ). It marked the start of what a future university should be – a future reimagined. Situated in the vibrant and dynamic city of Johannesburg, UJ is a multicultural university that is founded in African roots and is set on actualising the potential that higher education holds for the continent’s development.
With a vision to be a university anchored in Africa, UJ’s mission is to inspire the community and to transform and serve humanity through innovation and the collaborative pursuit of knowledge. It is founded on these goals:
- Imagination: we encourage and inspire independent, critical and free thought aimed at developing a better future for UJ and society
- Conversation: through facilitating respectful, meaningful and open dialogue, we encourage an inclusive environment that embraces diversity
- Regeneration: we are dynamic, progressive, innovative and responsive in our endeavour to provide access to global academic excellence and to promote the common good in a sustainable way
- Ethical foundation: we nurture and actively promote an ethos of honesty, transparency, accountability and fairness in all our endeavours
The UJ campuses offer a healthy balance of Arts, culture, and sporting activities over daily academic life. The university also caters for more personal needs with a comprehensive range of psychological and career development services and a Disability Unit that provides reasonable accommodation with regard to academic and technological support necessitated by students with disabilities. Each campus has a student centre that is equipped with meeting places, restaurants, recreational faculties, shops and cafeterias for added convenience. Student centres at UJ house bookshops, house banks, and medical doctors, to mention a few. In addition, students are offered a wide range of comfortable accommodation, which spans from various types of residences to fully equipped apartments.
At UJ, we are committed to providing excellence in teaching and learning and offer general, professional, vocational and formative programme. We support access to a wide range of academic and technological learning, teaching and research, and hold the belief that challenging, creating, exploring and leading knowledge is the only way the future can be reimagined.
UJ has collaborated with Voices Unite because:
‘It is so important that the youth of South Africa be provided this opportunity to voice their opinions about their prospects in South Africa and the wider world. They are the ones who will shape the present and the future of this country and this platform is an essential tool for growth and learning’.
– Prof Suzy Graham, Associate Professor/Head of Politics and International Relations, Humanities Department, University of Johannesburg
