The skills you need to become a successful leader
If you are currently thinking about running for a leadership position within your class, university or workplace, it’s important to focus on leadership as a journey or learning experience, and not a set of goals. The foundation of successful leadership is a set of skills. You may have earned a leadership position through a combination of knowledge, confidence and hard work, but once earned, you will need a new set of skills to allow yourself to become a successful leader.
Here are some skills that can help you better yourself as a leader…
- Know who you are
Stepping into a new role, one that you may have been assigned based on what you bring to the table or how people perceive you can be daunting. It also leaves you open to an unfamiliar area of constant criticism and scrutiny. As a leader, you need to know who you are and be confident in yourself and your ideas. You need to accept that you won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but you will need to take in the bad and create something good out of it.
- Listen and observe
As a leader, it should not put you on a pedestal where people should only listen and follow what you have to say. Leadership is all about those around you. You will need to listen to people, no matter the situation. A good leader is those that observe the actions and emotions of those around them.
- Managing your emotions
A leader who is unable to mange their emotions can cause havoc. Every emotion you display as a leader, either positive or negative has potential to influence those around you, as well as the success and impact of your team.
- Balance
Remember, you’re still young. Don’t forget to enjoy your life and have fun. Being able to balance your life is something you should be practicing before you become a leader. Pushing yourself too far and too much can result in burnout which never benefits anyone. Your private life should work cohesively with your professional life.
- Learn to follow
Strange, right? As a leader, you’re the one with the followers but great leaders should be able to follow as well. It’s important to pick up on skills from those around you that you may not have. Following others can also benefit you and your team.
