How to create realistic New Year’s resolutions

The new year is only a few days away and as we move closer to January 1st, people have started creating their 2021 resolutions for a brighter and better future. The recurring themes each year include a more active approach to health and fitness, improved finances, and learning new things for personal growth and development.

The common resolutions people hope to achieve in a new year includes more exercise, lose weight, get more organised, learn a new skill, get a new hobby, save money, quit smoking and even spend more time with friends and family.

If you are the kind of person that enjoys making resolutions but rarely sticks to them, here are four tips to help you make New Year’s resolutions you see through until the end of the year.

  1. Start small

Let’s start with an example. Maybe you want to make millions of Rands in the next five years, but if you wish to get closer to a big goal like that, you need to start small. By starting small, you set yourself up for success when you start with bite-sized goals because they’re more attainable to achieve, and let you enjoy smaller accomplishments. So, when you’re creating your New Year’s resolutions, start small. Stick to goals that you feel are manageable for your lifestyle.

  1. Research

Another example, if you wish to lose weight but you don’t know the first thing about losing weight or getting in shape, then you will definitely have a difficult time seeing results. As we’ve mentioned in a few of our other blog posts, research is incredibly important. Research before committing to anything you set out to do is how you will be able to stick to your resolutions and the easier it is to feel genuine excitement about your future.

  1. Passion sparks joy

If you care about something, it’s easier to get excited about creating new goals. Using your passions to move forward with your life ensures that you continue using your creative muscles and find happiness in what you do. The resolutions you make does not need to always be about winning prizes or gaining recognition, you can make resolutions solely for your own enjoyment. Consider what sparks joy in your life and go after it! It may even make you stick to your resolutions.

  1. Pick a few

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to accomplish a lot of things in life, but if you have several outstanding things on your list, it’s likely you won’t be able to get to all of them on time. This is where remaining realistic comes into play. Time is limited and if you trick yourself into thinking you have a lot of time to do everything, you’ll feel disappointed in the end. Pick a few goals and stick to them, you can’t change your entire lifestyle overnight. If you want to see bug changes, you need to move gradually.

All the best with your New Year’s resolutions and enjoy the new year!
