Peer pressure? More like social pressure!
By Tshepiso Mahlobogoane, 21, Mpumalanga
Have you ever felt like you need to do the next big thing? Like you need to go big or not live at all, I know I have. In a generation that feeds on status and popularity, where our success is defined by the next big thing you can do. I believe there is nothing wrong with being great and there is a good amount of pressure required to create anything.
Nature itself shows us that the process of growth requires pressure, and sometimes death. Do not get me wrong, I am not saying you need to die to be great, I believe Jesus Christ has already done that, no need to replicate. I spent so much time thinking to myself what do I want to do with my life because I felt that what I was doing was not enough because no one is really talking about it, my social status is not popping like people who are doing big things which made me ask myself: is what I am doing of any significance?
I had to sit down and write, ‘what do I want to do with my life’, ‘what story do I want to tell?’ because I realised that not all of us are going to be popular or trend – and I had to be content with that. This released so much pressure I had put on myself to perform. This does not exempt me from being great, it does not mean I do not need to challenge myself, but it means I found the joy of giving and doing my absolute best which can be recognised or not.
“Small changes and small steps can create massive impact.” Melissa McCreery.
So, I want to encourage you to continue doing your best to make history, every little thing you do matters, I am talking big or small, private, or public. Remember, just because what you are doing is not trending or making headlines does not mean it is not impacting this world greatly. The time and effort you take to make this world a better place in every little way is important. Recognise what you are good at and have a goal to achieve, then work every day to reach it, that is what I call authentic living. Other people’s success and achievements can challenge you to find your own potential to be great or can immobilise you when you use it as benchmark. Even identical twins are not identical. So, why would you want to be someone else when you can be the most authentic you can be, doing what only you can do?
You are a brand waiting to trend, be proud of it!
