Quick tips for successful exam preparation
Exams are around the corner – even if they’re online! We have put together some tips that may help you prepare yourself for your upcoming exams. Let us know if these work for you!
- Create a study schedule
Never leave anything for the last minute, I repeat, never leave anything for the last minute! Create a study schedule that works for you. Some students seem to thrive on last-minute studying; however, this is not the best approach. Write down how many exams you have, how many pages/chapters you need to go through, and the number of days leading up to your exam – these will be the first steps when creating your study schedule.
- Organise your study space
Make sure you have enough space to spread out your books and notes. In addition, ensuring that there’s sufficient brightness in the room and you have a comfortable chair to sit on is also important. Remove trinkets that could distract you when your mind decides to wander. It’s important to feel comfortable and at ease in your study space as this will let you focus a lot more.
- Flow charts and diagrams
We’ve been using these since primary school to learn the water cycle, remember? Flow charts and diagrams are even more important now. Visual aids are incredible sources to use when revising. Instead of learning hundreds of pages, try to summarise your notes into a flow diagram.
- Practice makes perfect
If you can get your hands on old tests and exams, get them! Going through old tests and exams can help you time yourself, understand the format and determine if you’re ready for your test/exam. A little something to note: some of the old questions could actually be in your upcoming exam!
- Study groups
Study groups can help you understand course content better, especially when it’s being explained to you. However, make sure the study group is focussed and not easily distracted because being a part of a study group does not work for everyone.
- Take regular breaks
Regular breaks are essential for the brain to regain focus. Studying for long hours can cause burn out and long-term retention of knowledge is almost impossible. Develop a routine that works in your favour.
- Healthy food and water is a must!
While studying, it’s best to stay away from unhealthy snacks – difficult, I know! Train your body and mind by choosing healthy snacks like fresh fruit and veggies. While studying, it is advisable to drink water because remaining hydrated adds to your overall mood.
All the best with your upcoming exams!
